Ensenada Honda, Puerto Grande

Ensenada Honda, also known as Deep Cove or Puerto Grande, is an inlet on Puerto Rico's northeastern coast, situated in the municipality of Ceiba. Early indigenous resistance and the absence of gold kept cash-strapped colonial administrations mostly away from the region, which eventually evolved into a hub for pirates and smuggling. In the 19th century, the bay's harbor facilitated the growth of the sugarcane industry, while in the 20th century, it hosted the Roosevelt Roads U.S. Naval Station. Currently, a Reserve Component maintains a military presence in the area, but the inlet, along with a civilian airport, serves as the focal point for local tourism and the fishing industry. As part of negotiations with the U.S. Navy, Ensenada Honda is also the subject of preservation projects. While the port area doesn’t offer much, the nearby town of Ceiba may pique your interest with its shopping options and variety of dining experiences, including the Broadway Gastro Bar.
