Khawr
Al Zubair, also known as Khor Al-Zubair, is a city
in southern Iraq near the port of Umm Qasr. While it's known for its industrial
zones with laboratories, petrochemical companies, and fertilizer plants, Khawr
Al Zubair offers a surprising cultural and natural side.
The
Gemstone Bookstore, the area's only bookstore, offers a
unique shopping experience, selling not only literary works but also gemstones
and rings. Explore the local markets for hidden treasures and traditional Iraqi
products. Nature enthusiasts can't miss Khor Al-Zubair National Park,
Iraq's largest protected area, spanning over 8,000 hectares. Here you can go
birdwatching, spot wildlife, or explore ancient Sumerian ruins. One of the
park's most fascinating residents is the critically endangered Mesopotamian
Marsh Turtle. History buffs will find archaeological sites with
ruins of temples and palaces dating back to the third millennium BC. Similar to
Al Basrah, Khawr Al Zubair offers a peaceful atmosphere under the
night sky, with nightlife options being limited.
