Berbera

Berbera, also known as Barbara, is the capital of Somaliland's Sahil region. Located on the Gulf of Aden, approximately 160 km from Hargeisa, the national capital, this historic port city boasts a rich blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and strategic importance.

Berbera's history is evident in its former role as the capital of the British Somaliland protectorate.  The city thrived as a major port for the Ifat, Adal, and Isaaq sultanates from the 13th to 19th centuries. Today, the DP World Berbera New Port continues to play a crucial role in regional trade.

Delve into local history and culture at the Berbera Public Library. Beyond historical exploration, Berbera's stunning white-sand beaches with crystal-clear waters beckon relaxation and water sports. Bustling markets offer a glimpse into local life, with vendors selling everything from foodstuffs and clothing to electronics and household items. While nightlife is limited, evenings spent by the beach provide tranquility and breathtaking views.
