Mers El Kebir

Mers El Kébir, a coastal city in Oran Province, Algeria, boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times. Originally a Roman port named Portus Divinus, it transformed into an Almohad naval arsenal in the 12th century. The city's strategic location made it a target for various rulers, including the Kingdom of Tlemcen and later the Ottoman Turks, Portuguese, and Spanish. By the 15th century, it became a notorious pirate haven. The French occupied Mers El Kébir in 1830 and renamed it Saint André de Mers-el-Kébir.

Today, visitors can explore the Stade de Mers El Kébir, a local sports stadium, or delve into history at the Pitch Batterie du Santon Castle and Djebel Santon Peak, offering scenic views. While the city doesn't have a vibrant nightlife, visitors can enjoy the coastal ambiance and explore the surrounding area.
