Tarabulus

Tarabulus, Lebanon's largest and most important northern city, overlooks the eastern Mediterranean Sea.  This vibrant city boasts a rich history dating back to at least the 14th century BCE.  Originally called "Athar" by the Phoenicians and later "Tripolis" by the Greeks, its modern name "Tarabulus" reflects its Greek roots.  The population is predominantly Sunni Muslim, with smaller Christian and Alawite communities.

Explore the city's significant religious site, the Mansouri Great Mosque.  History buffs can delve deeper at the Citadel of Tripoli, the largest crusader castle in Lebanon.  Admire the Mamluk architecture, the second-highest concentration after Cairo.  Offshore, discover the Palm Islands, a protected area known for endangered loggerhead turtles, rare monk seals, and migratory birds.

While specific shopping recommendations are limited, you can still find unique treasures at Tarabulus' local markets and shops.  In contrast to Latakia's nightlife, Tarabulus offers a vibrant scene with internationally recognized nightclubs, pubs, and bars. Enjoy music, dance, and drinks at various venues throughout the city.
