Sulina, Suluna

Sulina, a town and free port at the mouth of the Danube River, holds the distinction of being Romania's easternmost point.  Boasting a rich history dating back 2,700 years, Sulina thrived as an important port during Ottoman and Russian control periods.  Following the Russo-Ottoman War, it became part of Romania.  Today, Sulina's architecture and way of life reflect the diverse nationalities that have called it home over the centuries.

Explore historical sites like St. Nicholas's Greek Church, featuring icons and an iconostasis brought from Greece by navigators.  The Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas and Alexandru, constructed in Byzantine style, stands as another historic monument.  Learn about navigation at the Lighthouse of the European Commission of the Danube, now a museum.  The Sulina Mixed Cemetery offers a unique glimpse into the town's multicultural past with its impressive funeral monuments.
