Vasto

Vasto, a charming town in southern Abruzzo, overlooks the Adriatic Sea from its hilltop perch. The medieval old town is the heart of Vasto, centered around the picturesque Piazza Rossetti. Here you'll find the impressive Caldoresco Castle, dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Other historical gems include the Palazzo d'Avalos, now a museum with a pretty Neapolitan-style garden, and the Cattedrale di San Giuseppe, a cathedral featuring a simple Romanesque facade rebuilt after a Turkish raid.

Beyond the historical center, explore the unspoiled beauty of the Riserva Naturale di Punta Aderci, a rocky coastline popular with divers. The traditional fishing platforms known as "trabocchi" can also be seen here. For a refreshing dip, head to Spiaggia di Punta Penna, a beach about a 15-20 minute walk downhill from the old town.

For a taste of local life, visit the Mercato Santa Chiara farmers' market for fresh produce and specialties. Explore the Centro del Vasto shopping mall for a variety of stores, or discover art galleries and specialty shops in Calofficina, where you'll find Scintille bijoux and Percorsi d'Arte - Ceramiche Artistiche. When the day winds down, enjoy the trendy bars and dance clubs of Baja Village, indulge in delicious gelato and pastries at Pannamore Vasto, or take in the views with drinks and nibbles at Bau Bar.
