Scalloway

Scalloway, a charming port town on the Shetland Islands, boasts a rich past as the island's capital in the 17th century.  Today, this picturesque town with a population of around 1,200 people offers a glimpse into its fascinating history.  Scalloway Castle, a prominent landmark overlooking the town, was built between 1599 and 1607 using forced labor under the orders of Earl Patrick Stewart.

History buffs will be enthralled by the Scalloway Museum, an engaging institution that sheds light on the brave efforts of the "Shetland Bus" and local Norwegians during World War II resistance operations.  Explore the well-preserved walls of Scalloway Castle and delve deeper into the town's past at the adjacent museum.  The Shetland Bus Memorial provides a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives during the war.

While Scalloway doesn't boast a vibrant nightlife scene, you can find local shops offering essentials and unique treasures.  For a wider variety of shopping options, the nearby town of Lerwick, just 6 miles away, is the perfect destination.  In the evening, unwind and soak in the town's local atmosphere at a cozy pub or bar.
