Stromness

Stromness, the second-largest town in Orkney, graces the southwestern coast of Mainland, Orkney.  This historic seaport, nestled on the shores of Hamnavoe, an inlet of Scapa Flow, served as a crucial stop for sailors for centuries.  Its fine anchorage made it the last port of call before embarking on transatlantic voyages. Today, Stromness welcomes visitors arriving on NorthLink Ferries from mainland Scotland.

Step back in time at Skara Brae, a Neolithic village dating back an astonishing 5,000 years.  Explore the well-preserved stone-built houses and delve into the lives of the village's inhabitants through a reconstructed prehistoric home. For a taste of mystery, head to the Ring of Brodgar, a prehistoric stone circle shrouded in time.  Set against a dramatic landscape, this ancient monument ignites the imagination and is perfect for a contemplative walk or a captivating photo session.

History buffs can delve deeper at the Stromness Museum, where local artifacts and exhibits bring the islands' rich past to life.  For contemporary art enthusiasts, the Pier Arts Centre offers a platform for acclaimed works and captivating exhibitions.

Stromness offers delightful shopping options.  Quernstone Knitwear Shop caters to women seeking comfortable and stylish knitwear, including locally designed pieces.  Art lovers can discover beautiful artwork, including oil paintings, prints, and more, at ArtWorks of the Earth.

In the evening, unwind at The Ferry Inn, a cozy pub renowned for its delicious a la carte menu featuring fresh local produce.  This haven for weary travelers has even been awarded the prestigious CAMRA Northern Isles Pub of the Year title.
