Hawk Inlet

Hawk Inlet: Nestled on the northern tip of Admiralty Island in Alaska, Hawk Inlet, also known as Weinedel in the Tlingit language (meaning "Eelgrass Where Herring Spawn"), boasts a rich history and abundant natural resources. Historically, it served as a vital passage for travel between Stephens Pass and Chatham Strait. Today, recreational, commercial, and subsistence fishermen from nearby communities frequent the inlet for its bounty of salmon, halibut, clams, and shrimp.

Designated as a National Monument, Admiralty Island is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. This island is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, with a particularly dense population of brown bears and eagles. An interesting fact to note is the presence of Greens Creek Mine, located adjacent to Hawk Inlet. This mine holds a unique distinction as the only U.S. mine permitted to operate within a national monument.
