Nueva Gerona
Nueva Gerona, the capital
of Isla de la Juventud special municipality and province in Cuba, was founded
in 1830 by Francisco Dionisio Vives, boasting a population of 59,049 as of
2012. Nestled between the Sierra de Caballos and Sierra de Casas
mountains, it enjoys proximity to the Río Las Casas, offering a
navigable waterway to the Caribbean Sea. The city's bustling commercial and
cultural hub, Calle Real Street (also known as Calle 39
Street), houses a diverse range of industries, from sugar
mills to cigar factories, alongside various manufacturing and commercial
enterprises. Visitors can explore numerous museums and historic sites,
including the Museo de la Revolución and the Presidio
Modelo, once a prison and now a museum, immersing
themselves in the rich history and culture of the region.
