Ahukini Landing
Ahukini Landing, nestled on the south
side of Hanama’ulu Bay in Kauai, holds a significant place in the island's
history. Once the first port on Kauai where inter-island vessels could dock
directly, it played a crucial role in the island's early development. Built in
1920, the small concrete pier and breakwater served as a vital link for trade
and transportation.
However, the completion of Nawiliwili
Harbor in 1930 and the closure of the Makee
mill in Kealia in 1934 led to a decline in
Ahukini Landing's importance. The pier was eventually dismantled in 1978,
leaving behind a historical imprint.
Today, Ahukini Landing offers a serene
escape. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views of Hanama’ulu
Bay, with the crashing waves against the
jetty and the old railroad pier providing a captivating backdrop. The area is
popular for fishing and crab netting, attracting both casual anglers and
serious enthusiasts. Moreover, its proximity to Lihue
Airport makes it a convenient spot for
photography enthusiasts to capture stunning images.
