Kiholo
Kiholo Bay, nestled in the Puʻu Waʻawaʻa ahupuaʻa on
Hawaii's Big Island, is a captivating natural wonder. Originally a man-made
fishing pond created by King
Kamehameha the Great, the
bay's unique character was shaped by a lava flow from Mauna Loa in 1859, resulting in its distinctive black pebble
beaches.
Explore the Keanalele Freshwater Pool, a hidden gem within an ancient lava
tube, or marvel at the deep teal waters of the Kiholo Bay Lagoon, where fresh and seawater mingle. The bay is renowned as a haven for
green sea turtles, offering visitors a chance to witness these magnificent
creatures in their natural habitat. Camping is permitted on weekends (Friday to
Sunday) with a permit, providing a unique opportunity to connect with nature.
The Hui Aloha Kiholo community group works tirelessly to
preserve and protect this special place.
After a day of exploration, unwind at
the Aloha Wine Bar, where you can savor fine wines,
spirits, Kona coffee, and gourmet bites in a charming
setting. For a more relaxed atmosphere, head to the Clipper Lounge and enjoy drinks with ocean views.
Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture and cuisine at the Kona Village Luau, or savor the beachfront dining
experience at the Lava
Lava Beach Club.
