Atuona
Atuona, nestled on Atuona Bay along the southern coast of Hiva Oa in French
Polynesia, is a town steeped in history and artistic inspiration. Once the
capital of the Marquesas
Islands, Atuona remains a cultural hub,
surrounded by the majestic Temetiu
peak. Renowned as the final resting place of
the artist Paul Gauguin, the town also holds the remains of the
Belgian singer Jacques Brel.
Visit the Église De L’Immaculée Conception to appreciate its historical
significance, or explore the island on two wheels by renting a bike from Hanakee Rental Bike. For underwater adventures, MARQUISES DIVING offers opportunities to discover the
region's marine life. To explore further, rent a car or ATV from Marquises Cycles & Cars.
Immerse yourself in local culture by
visiting the public market, open from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm (noon on Saturdays).
Discover a range of local crafts, from black pearls and tiare soaps to monoi
oil and colorful pareu fabrics. While Atuona's nightlife is relaxed, you can
experience the local rhythm by attending ceremonies at the Église De L’Immaculée Conception or enjoying sunset drinks at the Paul Gauguin Cultural Center.
