Haydarpasa, Haidar Pasha
Haydarpaşa, on the Asian
side of Istanbul bordering the Sea of Marmara, offers a unique blend of history
and modern offerings. Originally named after Ottoman Vizier Haydar
Pasha,
it's known for its public buildings and historical significance.
The star
attraction is the stunning Haydarpaşa Terminal, built in 1871 by German engineers. Part of
the never-completed Istanbul-Baghdad railway, this architectural marvel
combines European and Ottoman styles.
Admire the intricate facade details, ornate carvings, and grand
windows. At the back of the terminal
lies an excavation site (currently closed for renovation) believed to be ruins
of an ancient Byzantine-era city. You can still catch a glimpse from the Tibbiye
Caddesi bridge.
For modern
conveniences, Haydarpaşa offers the CarrefourSA shopping mall. Explore unique finds at Lemur Store, featuring
handmade bags, accessories, and illustrations. Tasarımsal Olaylar (Butik
81) is
a local designer shop where you can discover one-of-a-kind dresses and jewelry.
While nightlife isn't as abundant here compared to other areas, cozy pubs and
bars like Salpa Bar, Karga Bar, or Dunia Cafe Bar offer a
relaxing evening.
