Porthmos Evripou, Euripo Strait, Evripou Porthmos
Porthmos
Evripou, also known as the Euripus Strait, is a narrow waterway
separating the island of Euboea from mainland Greece. This fascinating natural
wonder stretches 8 kilometers in length and varies in width from 40 meters to
1.6 kilometers. The strait is renowned for its strong tidal currents, which can
reach velocities of 12 knots and reverse direction several times a day. Legend has it
that Aristotle himself drowned here, unable to solve the mystery of the
currents.
Explore the
main port town of Chalkίδα (Chalcis), an important trading center since ancient
Greece. Stroll through the historic town, explore the waterfront, and visit the
local markets. While not a major shopping hub, Chalkída offers local stores and
markets. For a scenic experience, cross the Euripus Bridge, a 395-meter
cable-stayed bridge connecting Chalkída to the mainland. In the evenings, enjoy
the relaxed atmosphere of cafes and music bars along the shore.
