Yithion, Gytheio
or Gythio, also the ancient Gythium or Gytheion a charming coastal town
on the eastern shore of the Mani Peninsula, boasts a rich history. Once the seaport of Ancient
Sparta, Gytheio's strategic location continued to shape Maniot history even
after its decline as a major port in the 4th century AD. Today, Gytheio is the
largest town in the East Mani municipality.
History buffs
can explore the nearby mythical Cranae Island, where Paris and Helen
are said to have spent their first night together. Relax on the famous Mavrovouni
Beach,
