Argostolion
Argostoli, also known
as Argostolion, is a captivating town and municipality on Kefalonia Island in
the Ionian
Islands, Greece. Situated on the western side of Kefalonia, Argostoli overlooks the
beautiful Koutavos Lagoon and natural harbor. The town has served as the capital and administrative center
of Kefalonia since 1757, following a population shift from the old capital of Agios Georgios
(also known as Kastro). This shift aimed to capitalize on the trading opportunities
provided by the sheltered bay. Argostoli's strategic location subsequently led to its development as one of
the busiest ports in Greece, fostering prosperity and growth.
