Pontrieux
Pontrieux, a captivating town nestled along the banks of the River Trieux in northern Brittany, boasts a unique history. Once
a thriving inland port known for its linen and other industries, Pontrieux now embraces tourism. The
historic center revolves around two squares: Place de la Liberté and Place Mme Le Trocquer.
The Maison de la Tour, also known locally as the Eiffel Tower, houses the Pontrieux Tourist Office and
is a great starting point for your exploration.
Pontrieux boasts a unique feature: 50 private lavoirs, beautifully restored wash
areas that once allowed families to do laundry by the river. Lush greenery and
colorful flower displays enhance the picturesque scene along the riverbanks.
Immerse yourself in history at the Fête
des Lavoirs, a celebration of these
historic washhouses held every August 15th. Explore the charming Richel
Watermill and the grand 17th-century Hotel
de Keruzec. Take a leisurely stroll
through the historic port area, or explore the lavoirs from a unique
perspective on a boat trip along the river.
Pontrieux offers a delightful shopping
experience. Explore specialty and gift shops at 105 Degrés, or browse the nice selection
of shops along Rue St Yves. Cross the river on the St
Yves bridge for further exploration.
While Pontrieux isn't known for a vibrant nightlife scene, a magical experience
awaits in the evening. Take a boat trip along the river and soak in the beauty
of the illuminated lavoirs and bridges, creating a scene unlike anything
experienced by the original domestic staff who once used these washhouses.
