Sorvagur, Sorvaag
Sørvágur, a village on
the island of Vágar in the Faroe Islands, boasts a rich history dating back to the first 100-150 years
after the Faroese Landnám in 825. Legend has it
that the village was named after the first settler, ‘Sørli,’ while
another theory suggests the name originates from the Old Norse word ‘Seyr,’ meaning sand
or foggy rain. Sørvágur is the
largest village in Sørvágur Municipality and sits at the landward end of Sørvágsfjørður.
Sørvágur's scenic beauty
is undeniable. Sørvágsvatn Lake, one of the
largest in the Faroe Islands, stuns visitors with its breathtaking views. The dramatic Bøsdalafossur waterfall,
cascading directly into the ocean, is another natural wonder waiting to be
explored. A short trip to Gásadalur reveals the
picturesque village and its iconic Múlafossur waterfall, which also
plunges into the sea. Sports enthusiasts
can explore the open football stadium where the local club 07 Vestur plays. For
everyday needs, Sørvágur has grocery stores and a gas station. Østrøm offers a unique shopping
experience, showcasing the best of Faroese design. Nightlife options are limited in this
peaceful village, but you can unwind at the retro cafe in the basement of Guesthouse Hugo.
