Tvoroyri, Tverra
Tvøroyri, the largest
settlement on Suðuroy Island, is located in its northern part. This village, nestled on the east coast, was
founded in 1836 with the establishment of the Royal Danish Monopoly
Trade Store. Over time, Tvøroyri flourished,
particularly after the abolition of the store's monopoly in 1856. By the early 20th century, it had become one
of the largest towns in the Faroe Islands, boasting a thriving fishing industry.
Immerse
yourself in culture at the SALT Cultural House, a vibrant hub hosting events, exhibits,
and performances. Explore the scenic
nature pearl, Hvannhagi, with a hike starting near Tvøroyri's
hospital. Venture to nearby Froðba, a village
showcasing columnar basalt formations along the road, and pay homage to the
poet Poul
F.
Joensen. Another neighboring village, Trongisvágur, features
residential houses, a sports center, and the TB Tvøroyrar Bóltfelag football
stadium.
Tvøroyri offers a
convenient selection of shops, cafes, and museums. Look out for unique
hand-knitted items reflecting the Faroese heritage. Grocery stores like Sp/f Esla and Bónus ensure you
have everything you need during your stay.
While nightlife options are limited in Tvøroyri, you can
enjoy cultural events at SALT. For a livelier scene,
head to Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands.
