Barentsburg
Barentsburg is the
second-largest settlement in Svalbard, Norway, with a
population of around 455 residents. Established as a coal mining town, it was
named after the Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz. Today, the
settlement is still largely made up of ethnic Russians and
Ukrainians.
Despite its
remote location, Barentsburg boasts a
surprising array of amenities. Visitors will find a coal-powered power plant, a
hospital, a hotel, a school, a kindergarten, and cultural and sports
facilities.
If you're interested in the town's history, the Barentsburg Mine offers a
glimpse into its coal mining past. Explore local crafts at the Barentsburg
Handicraft Center, or admire historical expositions and art
at the ArtArctic Gallery. When it's time to
unwind, grab a souvenir at the Barentsburg Souvenir Shop or enjoy a
locally brewed beer and a meal at the Red Bear Bar &
Brewery, the first brewery established on Svalbard in 2012.
