Bernard Harbor
Located on the
mainland of Nunavut, Canada, Bernard Harbor, also known
as Nulahugiuq, boasts a rich history.
Situated on Dolphin and Union Strait, southwest of
Sutton Island, this bay was once a
vital Hudson's Bay Company trading post. It also
played a role in continental defense, serving as a Distant Early
Warning Line site in the past and now housing a North Warning
System station. The closest community is Kugluktuk, roughly 100
kilometers south.
Despite its remote location, Bernard Harbor holds a
surprising charm. History buffs will be captivated by its past as a trading
post and Cold War outpost. However, the true gems of Bernard Harbor lie beyond
its historical significance. Art
enthusiasts will find a treasure trove in the nearby community of Yellowknife. Here, a
vibrant art scene thrives, with galleries like Down to Earth
Gallery, Aurora Emporium Art Gallery, and Gallery of the
Midnight Sun showcasing the works of talented local artists. From handcrafted
souvenirs to unique clothing options, there's something for
every taste.
