Bernard Harbor
Bernard Harbor is a scenic
bay nestled in the North Slope Borough of Alaska. Located on
the Beaufort Sea coast, it juts out from Jago Lagoon, just
northeast of Barter Island. Manning Point and Bernard Spit form the
flanks of this 2.6-mile-long bay. While the community of Kaktovik lies closest
to Bernard Harbor, the area
itself offers a taste of Alaskan remoteness.
Nature lovers
will find beauty around every corner. Jago Lagoon, a stunning
body of water, rests southwest of the harbor, while Barter Island, known for
its unique indigenous trading tradition, sits just across the water. Birders
and wildlife enthusiasts can keep their eyes peeled for a variety of fauna in
this pristine environment.
While Bernard Harbor itself lacks
shopping options, a trip to nearby Kaktovik might yield
some locally owned stores. Be aware that nightlife in this remote location is
virtually nonexistent. However, the long Alaskan nights
present a prime opportunity for viewing spectacular northern lights displays.
