Prudhoe Bay
Prudhoe Bay, a census-designated
place in the North Slope Borough, lies at the heart of Alaska's oil fields on
the Arctic Ocean coast. The nearby Deadhorse houses the airport,
lodging, and general store, while the actual oil rigs and processing facilities
are scattered across gravel pads on the tundra.
Prudhoe Bay is the starting point
for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which stretches 800
miles south to Valdez. Beyond its industrial significance, Prudhoe
Bay offers unique experiences for visitors. The Dalton Highway boasts scenic
beauty, diverse wildlife, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Adventurous
souls can take a dip in the freezing Arctic Ocean or embark on
an ATV tour to explore
the arctic terrain and wildlife. Breathtaking aerial views can be enjoyed on a helicopter
tour, while those interested in the oil industry can take an
oilfield tour. Wildlife enthusiasts can
go whale watching and spot grey whales and beluga whales in the Beaufort Sea. For shopping needs, the Prudhoe Bay
General Store offers a wide variety of items, including cold-weather gear,
groceries, and basic supplies. Brooks Range Supply Inc. caters to
industrial supply needs. Nightlife in Prudhoe Bay is limited,
but the long dark nights provide spectacular viewing conditions for the Northern
Lights.
